British Teen Faces Trial in Dubai Over Holiday Romance
An 18-year-old British man from Tottenham, Marcus Fakana, is due in a Dubai court on December 9. He stands accused of having a sexual relationship with a 17-year-old British girl while both were on family holidays.
Holiday Romance Sparks Legal Storm
The case blew up after the girl’s mother found messages and photos on her daughter’s phone once they returned to the UK. Acting as her legal guardian, she reported the relationship to Dubai authorities. Under UAE law, the girl was still officially a minor at the time, triggering charges against Fakana.
The pair reportedly sparked their romance last September while vacationing in Dubai. Fakana was arrested in his hotel shortly after the complaint was filed. Dubai’s public prosecution stressed the charges fall under laws protecting minors and assured the trial would be fair.
“Dubai’s legal system is committed to protecting the rights of all individuals and ensuring impartial judicial proceedings,” the prosecution said. Fakana’s legal team requested the December trial date.
Campaigners Call Case ‘Unique’ and Tragic
Radha Stirling, head of UK-based Detained in Dubai, called the case unusual due to the tiny age gap. “This is clearly just a case of two older teenagers, both now the same age, caught up because a mother reported the behaviour,” she said.
Stirling also revealed the emotional toll on Fakana and his family: “Marcus and his parents are extremely distressed. They’re devastated at the thought of a harsh sentence over what is essentially a teenage relationship.”
Family Pleads for Mercy as Trial Looms
Fakana’s parents travelled to Dubai but have since returned to London, leaving their son to face the charges alone. In detention, Fakana shared his heartbreak: “I pray this nightmare will be over and I’ll be home for Christmas.”
UK Government Steps In
The UK’s Foreign, Commonwealth, and Development Office confirmed it’s supporting Fakana. A spokesperson said: “We are supporting a British man in the UAE and are in contact with his family.”
Warning for UK Travellers to Dubai
The case spotlights the importance of knowing local laws when abroad, especially in the UAE where rules differ sharply from the UK. Dubai remains a popular spot for Brits, but incidents like this serve as stark warnings to respect cultural and legal boundaries.
Advocates urge leniency in Fakana’s case, citing the minor age difference and consensual nature of the relationship. The trial will be closely watched on both sides of the Gulf.
