“Do Not Travel” Alert Issued After Major Signal Failure Hits London Waterloo

South Western Railway (SWR) has slapped a “Do Not Travel” warning on all services to and from London Waterloo following a significant signal failure early this morning.

Massive Delays and Cancellations Hit SWR Network

The technical fault struck at around 7am, unleashing chaos across the SWR network. Trains in and out of London Waterloo face delays of up to 60 minutes. Many services have been cancelled or shuffled to different platforms at the last minute. The disruption is expected to last all day, Monday 21 July, as engineers race to fix the problem.

Free Alternative Travel Options Offered

Passengers stuck in the turmoil can use their valid SWR tickets today on other transport services — at no extra cost. Here’s what’s available:

  • London Buses: Connecting Waterloo, Clapham Junction, Wimbledon, Surbiton, Kingston, Hampton Court, Weybridge, and Shepperton
  • Falcon Buses 28: Guildford via Worplesdon and Brookwood
  • Stagecoach South 34 & 35: Guildford to Woking
  • Train Links:
    • Between Wimbledon, Clapham Junction, and Waterloo
    • Between Paddington, Victoria, and Waterloo
    • CrossCountry: Reading to Bournemouth
    • Southern Services: Portsmouth Harbour to London Victoria, Southampton Central to Havant, Dorking to London Victoria
    • Great Western Railway: Guildford to Reading, London Paddington to Exeter St Davids, Basingstoke to Reading, Salisbury to Westbury, Weymouth to Westbury

Ticket Validity Extended, Passengers Urged to Hold Off Travel

SWR confirmed any unused tickets for today will also be valid tomorrow, Tuesday 22 July. A spokesperson said:

“We apologise for the disruption and strongly advise customers to delay travel or use alternative routes while we work closely with Network Rail to restore normal service.”
