Youth Worker Murdered in Brutal Tottenham Attack
A violent group attack in Tottenham has ended in tragedy. Neron Quartey, 21, from Rosebay Drive, N17, has been convicted of murdering 22-year-old youth worker Kwabena Nelson. The verdict came after a tense Old Bailey trial that began on 30 July and concluded on 16 August.
Life Behind Bars for Quartey
Quartey was sentenced to life imprisonment, with a minimum of 26 years to serve. The horrific stabbing happened in the early hours of Saturday, 3 February, at Kemble Road, near St Mary’s Close, Tottenham.
Emergency crews, including London Ambulance Service and Air Ambulance, rushed to the scene but Kwabena—known as Kobi to friends and family—was pronounced dead at the scene from multiple stab wounds and hypovolemic shock.
Ambush on Kemble Road
The court heard Quartey deliberately crashed his black Honda Civic into Kwabena’s grey Civic. A group armed with poles and knives then jumped out. Kwabena either got out or was forced from his car and was brutally attacked before the attackers fled.
Remarkably, Kwabena managed to call the police and a family member before succumbing to his injuries. His family arrived at the scene soon after, devastated to learn of his death.
Detective Inspector’s Appeal and Family Grief
“Kwabena was targeted in a savage attack,” said DI Jon Meager from the Homicide and Major Crime Command. “He was not involved in gangs and may have been mistaken for someone else. The brutality left him with little chance. His family is utterly devastated. While Quartey has been convicted, we believe others were involved and we will keep hunting them.”
Kobi’s mother, Serwah, expressed her heartbreak: “Kobi was my little boy, snatched away in a brutal, barbaric way. The cowards who did this have left our family shattered. Every day is a struggle. How could so few cause so much pain?”
Ongoing Investigation
Two young men, aged 19 and 18, and a 16-year-old girl were arrested shortly after the murder. They were released under investigation as police continue to hunt for other suspects.
