Three Charged After Eight-Hour Gen Z Protest Blocks Migrant Hotel Coach in Peckham
A charged protest by Gen Z activists outside a migrant hotel in Peckham, south-east London, ended with three arrests after demonstrators staged an eight-hour blockade. The activists tried to stop a coach carrying asylum seekers to the Bibby Stockholm barge, sparking a major police operation.
Police Face Assault While Clearing Blockade
The Metropolitan Police responded swiftly to reports of obstruction at the Best Western Hotel on Thursday morning. Officers met fierce resistance and were assaulted as they attempted to clear the coach’s path. In total, 45 people were arrested during the demonstration.
Three Protesters Face Charges for Obstructing Highway
- Callum Goode, 24, from Ashbourne, Derbyshire
- Jony Cink, 24, from Southwark
- Indea Barbe-Wilson, 31, from Lewisham
Goode and Cink are due to appear at Westminster Magistrates’ Court, with dates yet to be confirmed. Barbe-Wilson is set to face court on June 6.
Protesters Chant, Link Arms, and Sit to Block Asylum Seeker Transport
The crowd blocked the coach by linking arms and sitting in the road, chanting slogans like “no borders, no nations, stop deportations” and “refugees are welcome here.” Police efforts to disperse the crowd saw tense clashes.
Deputy Assistant Commissioner Ade Adelekan condemned the assaults on officers, praising their restraint despite hostility. Meanwhile, protesters accused police of using heavy-handed tactics and intimidation.
“The treatment of peaceful demonstrators and asylum seekers is deeply concerning,” said Laurence Smith, founder of the Lewisham Donation Hub.
Home Office Keeps Plans for Barge Transport Under Wraps
The Home Office has not confirmed whether the planned transport of asylum seekers to the Bibby Stockholm barge will proceed after the disruption. Home Secretary James Cleverly reinforced the government’s stance on immigration, vowing a “firm but fair approach” and insisting protests won’t stop enforcement efforts.
This explosive showdown throws a spotlight on the heated immigration debate gripping the UK, with activists and police locked in a tense standoff.
