Brave Officers Survive Horrific Knife Attack in Greater Manchester

Two Greater Manchester police sergeants were brutally attacked with a knife during what should have been a routine stop. Neighbourhood Sergeants Marc Foster and Tim Ansell were backing up a moped stop on July 26, 2023, when chaos erupted.

Sudden Knife Assault on Officers

While speaking to those involved, a man suddenly lunged at PS Foster from behind, slashing viciously at his throat. As Foster fought back, PS Ansell jumped in to protect his colleague — only to be stabbed repeatedly in the neck. The attacker showed no mercy.

Quick-Thinking PC Saves the Day with Taser

PC Marcus Wolstencroft, who had led the chase of the moped driver, rushed to help. Despite a failed initial Taser attempt, he stayed calm and fired again, successfully incapacitating the attacker. His cool nerves under pressure enabled the dangerous man to be restrained and detained, potentially saving more lives.

Lifesaving Efforts and Praise for Heroism

With PS Ansell bleeding severely from neck wounds, PS Foster sprang into action, applying lifesaving first aid with his bare hands until medics arrived.

Chief Superintendent Colette Rose said: “These officers faced a sudden, life-threatening attack while simply carrying out their duties. Their bravery prevented this incident from escalating and protected the public. They are a credit to the force and an inspiration to us all.”

Mike Peake, Chair of the Greater Manchester Police Federation, added: “This vicious knife attack is a grim reminder of the dangers officers face daily. Their professionalism and courage saved lives — they are true heroes.”

Both PS Foster and PS Ansell sustained serious slash wounds. The attacker has since pleaded guilty to attempted murder, confirming his deadly intent against police officers.
