NHS Staff Praised for Heroic Response to Isle of Wight Major Crash
The Isle of Wight NHS Trust has hailed its staff for their outstanding professionalism following a serious multi-vehicle crash in Newport. The incident involved two cars and a bus on Forest Road, resulting in numerous casualties, many with serious injuries.
Major Incident Declared as Multiple Casualties Arrive
The crash triggered the Trust’s full Major Incident protocol. Extra staff were quickly called in to handle the sudden influx of patients while continuing care for others already in hospital. Community support workers were also brought in to ease pressure on medical teams.
Ambulance Crews and Emergency Services Rush to Scene
Eight emergency ambulances and four air ambulances rushed to the crash site, joined by specialist clinicians from the Trust, fire service, and police. Despite tireless efforts, one person tragically died at the scene.
Patients Transported to Hospitals for Treatment
- 18 patients required triage, treatment, and transport
- Two were airlifted to southampton/" title="Southampton" data-wpil-keyword-link="linked">Southampton General Hospital
- Sixteen were taken to St Mary’s Emergency Department
- One patient was transferred to Brighton’s major trauma centre
- Several patients received treatment at St Mary’s, with one admitted
Hospital Chief Salutes Staff Efforts
“Our thoughts go out to everyone involved in yesterday’s tragedy, especially the family and friends of the person who sadly lost their life,” said Maggie Oldham, Isle of Wight NHS Trust Chief Executive. “I am extremely thankful and proud of all our staff for their superb professionalism and care. Everyone rallied to help, whether they were on duty or not.”
