Five Arrested After Chaotic Hotel Protests in UB7
Masked Mob Tries to Storm Crowne Plaza
Police were forced into action on Saturday, 30 August, after two anti-asylum groups clashed outside hotels on Stockley Road, UB7. Around midday, a group of masked men attempted a daring break-in via the rear entrance of the Crowne Plaza hotel, smashing security barriers in the process. Officers, already nearby, quickly called in reinforcements to contain the unrest.
Spreading Chaos: Protesters Target Novotel and Holiday Inn
A breakaway faction surged towards the Novotel on Cherry Lane before some protesters moved on to the Holiday Inn. Police swiftly set up cordons to stop further trouble.
Five Arrested, Officers Hurt
- Three people arrested during the initial breakaway protest activity
- Two more arrested as police dispersed the crowd later in the day
- Two officers sustained minor injuries amid the disorder
All five face charges including assault on a police officer, affray, and violent disorder. Police confirmed no protesters managed to get inside any of the targeted hotels.
Strict Dispersal Order and Heavy Police Presence
A Section 35 dispersal order was swiftly enforced, granting police power to eject troublemakers from the area. A police helicopter hovered overhead while ground units kept a visible presence to maintain order.
Police Commander Speaks Out
Commander Adam Slonecki said: “We have prepared with additional resources to police protests at migrant hotels over recent weeks and this weekend was no exception. We understand the strength of feeling on these issues, but where peaceful protest crosses the line into criminality, including injuries to our officers, we will act immediately. Five arrests were made for offences including assault on police, affray and violent disorder. Around 500 protesters gathered, but most have now dispersed. We will make further arrests if necessary. Local residents and businesses can expect a continued police presence and patrolling.”
