London Tube Goes 5G: Commuters Get Connected Underground
Say goodbye to dead zones! London’s Tube and Elizabeth Line stations are now buzzing with 4G and 5G mobile coverage, making it easier than ever for commuters to stay connected underground. And this is just the start — plans are underway to roll out even more coverage across the network.
Elizabeth Line Fully Wired Up
All stations on the Elizabeth Line, including major hubs like Paddington, Canary Wharf, Whitechapel, and Woolwich, now offer 4G access. Efforts are ongoing to bring coverage deep into the tunnels, turbocharging London’s transport network into the future.
Mayor Sadiq Khan said: “I promised customers high-speed mobile coverage at all stations and in tunnels, and I’m thrilled to see how fast the team is delivering 4G and 5G connectivity.”
More Stations to Join the Connected Revolution
Currently, 31 out of 121 underground Tube stations have mobile coverage — that’s 25% of all underground stops and two-thirds of the whole Tube network if you count above-ground stations.
- Covent Garden station on the Piccadilly Line is now online
- Victoria Line tunnels between Euston and Warren Street are covered
- Coming soon: Northern Line tunnels from Stockwell to Morden
- Bakerloo Line set for coverage next month
The rollout is powered by TfL working with Boldyn Networks, guaranteeing new connections don’t mess with safety systems.
Shashi Verma, TfL’s Chief Technology Officer, said: “The programme is gathering pace, bringing connectivity to commuters across London.”
Targeting 80% Network Coverage by 2024
By the end of 2024, TfL aims to cover around 80% of the entire Tube network — plus the full Elizabeth Line — with reliable mobile signal. This leap forward will make life easier for millions of daily travellers.
Billy D’Arcy, CEO UK & Ireland at Boldyn Networks, added: “Enhanced connectivity creates a safer, smarter city for residents, businesses and visitors. This summer’s expansion is a major step towards that vision.”
