From Homeless to Hero: London Ambulance Worker Wins National Award

Tania Makwana, 31, a London-based Assistant Ambulance Practitioner, has bagged The Prince’s Trust’s prestigious National Marvel Rising Star Award. The award celebrates young people who smash barriers to find lasting jobs.

Star-Studded Ceremony with Ant & Dec and Sir Ben Kingsley

At the glitzy event at Theatre Royal Drury Lane, hosted by Ant and Dec on 24 May, Tania received her trophy from Marvel legend Sir Ben Kingsley. Sir Ben praised her story, saying:

“What inspires me the most about Tania’s story is that, after everything she’s been through, she is driven to support others through her role in the London Ambulance Service. Congratulations Tania.”

Overwhelmed by the honour, Tania said:

“Winning The Prince’s Trust’s Rising Star Award is something I never expected. I’m proud of my achievements and thrilled my story can raise awareness for others facing similar struggles.”

Beating the Odds: From Abuse to Ambulance Service

Tania’s journey is nothing short of heroic. She left home at 17 and faced homelessness with no support. Later, an abusive relationship turned violent when her partner threw bleach at her. With help from police and support services, she fled to a women’s refuge, leaving behind over a decade of her life.

Reflecting on her breakthrough, Tania revealed:

“During lockdown, I spotted an Instagram ad for The Prince’s Trust’s Get Started with the Ambulance Service programme. It felt like fate because I’d always wanted to work in ambulance care.”

Living the Dream at London Ambulance Service

After thriving on the programme and acing her interview, Tania landed the role of Assistant Ambulance Practitioner at London Ambulance Service in January last year. It was a childhood dream come true.

She shared her inspiring outlook:

“As a kid, I watched TV shows where ambulance crews saved people and wished someone would save me. Now I’m the one rescuing others. I’m 31 and finally happy – my life has only just begun.”

Support from the Top

London Ambulance Service Chief Exec Daniel Elkeles said:

“Tania’s award is well-deserved. She’s a shining example for anyone facing tough times. We’re proud she’s achieved her dream and joined our ‘green family’. I urge anyone seeking a rewarding career to explore roles with London Ambulance Service.”

The Prince’s Trust and TK Maxx & Homesense Awards ceremony airs on 1 at 8:30pm on Thursday 26 May, celebrating life-changing achievements nationwide.
