UK Faces Arctic Blast and Snow Shocks Next Week
The UK is bracing for a chilly blast as an icy Arctic airmass moves in next week, threatening impactful snowfall and travel chaos.
Freeze Hits From Sunday
A cold northerly wind will drag frigid Arctic air across the country from Sunday, sticking around into early next week. Expect snow showers mainly over northern Scotland and Northern Ireland’s coasts.
As the week rolls on, a battle between cold Arctic air and milder Atlantic breezes from the southwest could trigger disruptive snow in parts of the UK. But with the event still a week away, forecast details remain sketchy.
Experts Warn of Disruptive Snowfall
Met Office’s Deputy Chief Meteorologist David Hayter said:
“The initial risk of snow from Sunday looks most likely around northern coastal areas, including the North Sea and Irish Sea coasts. We’re watching closely for where milder southwest air meets the cold air already settled over the UK – this clash could spark substantial snowfall in some spots.”
David adds, “Models show different possible outcomes, so we’re keeping a close eye and will refine forecasts as we get closer.”
Health and Travel Alerts Issued
With temperatures already diving below freezing overnight, the UK Health Security Agency has raised a Cold-Health Alert. Dr Agostinho Sousa, Head of Extreme Events and Health Protection at UKHSA, warned:
“Falling temps over the weekend can seriously impact people over 65 and those with health conditions, upping risks of heart attacks, strokes, and chest infections. Check on elderly and vulnerable friends, family, and neighbours to ensure they’re ready for the cold snap.”
Travel could also get tricky. RAC Breakdown spokesperson Simon Williams advises:
“With snow and ice on the horizon, drivers must be prepared. Always carry essentials like a warm waterproof coat, sturdy shoes, gloves, blanket, and a phone power bank. Many breakdowns in freezing weather happen because drivers were caught off guard. Prepare for the worst, hope for the best.”
