Blaze Rips Through Split-Level Maisonette, Candle Blamed
A fire tore through a split-level maisonette on the second and third floors, causing major damage to the home and part of the building’s exterior. Emergency crews rushed to the scene, treating a man, woman, and child for smoke inhalation.
Accidental Candle Sparks Inferno
Investigators believe the blaze was sparked accidentally by a candle left unattended. A spokesperson for the London Fire Brigade warned, “Candles, incense sticks, and oil burners are among the most common causes of fire.”
“It’s critical to never leave a candle alone and to keep them away from anything that can catch fire. You should also keep them in a heat-resistant holder and on a firm surface so they don’t fall over.”
Fire Brigade Calls for Candle Safety
- Always extinguish candles, incense, and oil burners before leaving the room or going to bed.
- Use heat-resistant holders on sturdy surfaces unlikely to topple.
- Keep flammable items like curtains, furniture, clothes, and hair away from open flames.
- Remember lights and candles can reach extreme heat capable of melting plastic surfaces like TVs or baths.
- Consider switching to LED candles—they’re a safer option, especially if you might fall asleep.
