London Fire Legend Charlie Pugsley Calls Time After 30 Heroic Years

From Rookie to Grenfell Hero

Deputy Commissioner Charlie Pugsley rang the final bell at Dowgate Fire Station this weekend, closing the chapter on an extraordinary 30-year career with the London Fire Brigade.

Charlie’s journey began in February 1996, battling blazes from Bow to Shoreditch, Stratford, and Peckham. He later became a key player in the Fire Investigation teams at New Cross and Dowgate, cracking some of London’s toughest fire cases.

His standout moment? Leading forensic investigations on site after the devastating Grenfell Tower fire in 2017, where his expertise helped untangle the tragedy’s deadly cause.

Campaigning for Fire Safety Reform

Since 2005, Pugsley has been a powerhouse for fire safety reform. His influence stretches from local streets to national policy and even international standards.

Most recently, he spearheaded the #ChargeSafe campaign tackling the hidden fire risks of lithium batteries in e-bikes and e-scooters.

As National Fire Chiefs Council’s lead officer for Electrical Safety and Fire Investigation, Charlie’s work has safeguarded countless UK homes.

Farewell Fire Chief, Hello CEO

“Time and again, I’ve witnessed staff bravery, empathy, and an unwavering commitment to keeping communities safe,” Charlie said. “Being part of the London Fire Brigade family for nearly 30 years has been a privilege. Serving emergency services in London truly is the best job in the world. You finish a shift knowing you’ve made a difference and helped people. That’s the very best job satisfaction.”

Retiring from frontline duties, Charlie isn’t slowing down. He’s taking on a new challenge as Interim Chief Executive Officer of the Building Safety Regulator. The London Fire Brigade salutes his dedication and wishes him the very best in his next chapter.
