Beware, Gosport! A dodgy salesman has been knocking on doors in Stoke Road and Gosport Town, claiming he’s here to “sort your meters out” for smart meter installation. But residents are being urged to stay vigilant and not fall for this con.
Fake Smart Meter Installer Claims It’s the Law
The imposter told one homeowner: “It’s government law, everyone’s got to have them.” When challenged, he said he worked for a company called E Energy, flashing a flimsy lanyard as proof. The resident stayed suspicious and asked which firm he represented. The man said Southern Electric had sent him. But the homeowner refused entry and insisted on checking with the real company.
Southern Electric Denies All Knowledge
A quick call to Southern Electric confirmed none of their staff use the name “E Energy” or conduct meter installs that way. The genuine firm has its own installers and has warned they don’t send anyone door-to-door like this.
Conman Tries Other Doors Despite Being Chased Off
After being exposed and sent packing, the rogue was spotted hitting up more homes down Mayfield and 1 Road, still claiming to arrange smart meters.
E Energy’s Sketchy Past
It turns out E Energy has a dodgy record, having been reported to the ombudsman for deceiving customers before. Gosport residents are warned: do NOT let anyone claiming to be from E Energy into your home.
