Major Flooding Closes Eltham Road After Massive Water Main Burst
Chaos hit South East London this morning as a huge water main burst on Eltham Road, Greenwich, sparking a major incident declared by TfL. The road was completely flooded, forcing emergency services to rescue trapped residents and evacuate the area.
Rescues and Road Closures
Firefighters rushed to the scene with boats, helping residents and about 150 schoolchildren safely cross the flooded streets. The burst main has also impacted Lee Green Fire Station, leaving fire crews battling the rising waters. Eltham Road remains closed from the A2212 Burnt Ash Road to Weigall Road, with drivers urged to avoid the area.
Thousands Without Water Across Multiple Postcodes
Thames Water confirmed that thousands of homes in Greenwich and Lewisham — including SE3, SE7, SE9, SE10, SE12, SE13, and SE15 — are suffering from no water or low pressure due to the burst pipe. Thames Water teams are on-site racing to stop the leak and restore supplies.
“We sincerely apologise if you are experiencing low or no water pressure as a result of a large burst pipe on the A20 Eltham Road early this morning,” Thames Water said. “We’re working to stop the flow caused by the burst. Supplies should begin to return soon. We also apologise for any inconvenience caused by the road closure.”
Local Businesses and Residents Left in Trouble
The flooding covers roads near shops and restaurants, causing serious disruption to local businesses. Emergency crews continue working hard to manage the crisis as repairs proceed. Residents are advised to stay clear of the area until the situation is fully under control.
