Train Drama: Lumo Racer Nearly Overturns at 76mph—More Than Double Speed Limit!
A Lumo train heading to London King’s Cross came perilously close to disaster in April 2022. According to a fresh report from the Rail Accidents Investigation Branch (RAIB), the train sped through Spital Junction, near Peterborough, at a terrifying 76mph—over twice the 30mph speed limit, which drops further to 25mph at the junction.
Passengers were hurled from their seats and battered by falling luggage, injuring some. Luckily, no one was seriously hurt, but RAIB warned the train was “close to a speed that would have led to it overturning.” Some wheels may have even lifted off the rails in the terrifying episode.
Passenger Panic & Off-Duty Driver Saves the Day
The train made an emergency stop at Peterborough. Lumo debated evacuating passengers, but an off-duty driver onboard took control and steered the train safely on to London.
What Went Wrong? Driver Error and System Failings
RAIB’s investigation pointed to the driver expecting to use a faster line—like on previous journeys—but was instead routed onto a slower, diverging route. This caused the dangerously high speed at the junction.
- The driver failed to respond properly to junction signals.
- There was a lack of awareness about the signal conditions.
- Lumo hadn’t fully assessed risks of routing trains via slower diverging paths.
- Network Rail lacked controls to stop trains accelerating dangerously after a “proceed” signal.
- Falling luggage caused about half of all passenger injuries.
RAIB Issues Strong Safety Recommendations
The report made four key recommendations:
- Lumo must review and tighten safety measures to prevent overspeeding at junctions.
- Network Rail should work with train operators to share vital risk information and implement control measures at dangerous junctions.
- Lumo needs to minimize risks from falling luggage on board.
- Improved collaboration between Network Rail and operators to understand infrastructure and driver expectations.
Lumo welcomed the report, confirming they have already put all recommended changes into action. This includes ramped-up driver training and better luggage management to keep passengers safe.
This hair-raising incident is a stark warning—rail safety vigilance cannot slip. Ongoing risk checks and strict protocols remain vital to avoid potential disasters and protect travellers nationwide.
