UK Launches Anti-Dumping Review on Chinese Steel Ropes and Cables
TRA Targets Chinese Steel Imports
The Trade Remedies Authority (TRA) has kicked off a fresh investigation into anti-dumping duties on steel ropes and cables from China. The review, announced today (30 March 2023), also covers products routed through Morocco and Korea.
What’s Being Reviewed?
The probe focuses on steel ropes and cables, including locked coil ropes. But stainless steel variants are off the table. These products are vital to sectors like construction, oil and gas, crane and bridge manufacturing, and even household appliances.
Notably, UK imports of steel wire ropes and cables have surged between 2019 and 2022. At the same time, average prices of Chinese imports dropped over 2022, raising concerns about fair competition.
How the TRA Will Investigate
The TRA will scrutinise UK production alongside import levels from China, Morocco, and Korea. The investigation covers goods from 1 January to 31 December 2022. Injury to UK producers will be assessed from 2019 to the end of 2022.
Businesses affected—importers, exporters, and UK manufacturers—can get involved by registering interest via the TRA’s online platform. The deadline for submissions is 17 April 2023.
