A Lamborghini driver has been banned from the roads for almost two months after being clocked at 140mph by Essex Police’s Roads Policing Unit.
Officers were carrying out speed checks on the A120 near Takeley on Saturday 4 January when they detected the high-performance Lamborghini Urus travelling at more than double the legal limit.
Traffic congestion allowed police to catch up with the vehicle near Stansted Airport, where they also discovered the front windows had been illegally tinted to less than 30% light transmission.
The car was seized under anti-social driving legislation, and the driver – Fred McKennon, 60, of Elmstead Road, Colchester – was reported for speeding and driving a vehicle in a dangerous condition.
McKennon appeared at Basildon Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday 12 August, where he was handed a 56-day driving ban, three penalty points for the tinted windows, and ordered to pay nearly £1,700 in fines and costs.
PC Matthew Mehen of the Boreham Roads Policing Unit said:
“Speeding at this level is completely unacceptable and shows a reckless disregard for safety. Excessive speed dramatically reduces a driver’s ability to react to changing conditions and shortens braking distances. We will continue to take firm action against anyone who chooses to break the law and put others at risk.”
Police say speeding remains a major factor in serious and fatal collisions. As part of their Vision Zero target to eliminate road deaths by 2040, officers will continue targeted enforcement and roadside checks to tackle dangerous driving.
Under UK law, windscreens must allow at least 75% of visible light through and front side windows at least 70%. Darker tints reduce visibility, particularly at night or in poor weather, increasing the risk of crashes.
