Ex-Police Sergeant Binned for Lewd Pub Behaviour
Former Acting Police Sergeant James O’Sullivan has been slammed for gross misconduct. A hearing found he breached professional standards on “authority, respect and courtesy” as well as “discreditable conduct.” If still serving, he would have been axed immediately – no questions asked.
Inappropriate Sex Comments and Lewd Gestures
On 27 July 2020, O’Sullivan was off-duty in a NW1 pub with a junior female officer when he crossed the line. He made unwanted sexual remarks, showed her an explicit image, and made lewd hand gestures.
The woman reported the behaviour, sparking an investigation by the Met’s Directorate of Professional Standards. O’Sullivan was placed on restricted duties and eventually resigned on 6 November 2022.
Police Boss Praises Brave Whistleblowers
North West BCU chief Detective Superintendent Barry Loader praised the officers who came forward. He said: “I would like to commend the officers who came forward to report O’Sullivan’s actions. I hope this sends a clear message that inappropriate behaviour will not be tolerated in the Police Service.”
Barred from Policing for Good
O’Sullivan has now been added to the College of Policing’s Barred List. Anyone on this list is banned from working in police forces, local policing bodies, the Independent Office for Police Conduct, or HM Inspectorate of Constabulary and Fire and Rescue Services – effectively ending his policing career for good.
