Disposable BBQ Sparks Blaze, Destroys Two Beach Huts in Frinton
Two beach huts were reduced to ashes in Frinton after embers from a disposable barbecue triggered a fire. Firefighters raced to the scene and managed to stop the flames from spreading further, but the damage was already done.
Firefighters Battle Blaze Near Second Avenue
Crews from Essex Fire and Rescue were called out at around 9pm on Friday night to tackle the inferno near Second Avenue, Frinton. The fire was fully extinguished by 10pm, but not before two huts were completely destroyed and two more suffered fire damage.
Warning Issued Over Disposable Barbecue Safety
Crew Manager Andy Deex revealed the fire started when embers from a hot disposable BBQ were dumped into a bin still glowing. He urged:
If you’re using disposable barbecues, please make sure the barbecue and any embers are fully cooled before you put it in a bin. If you’re unsure, cool the barbecue with water before binning it, as it only takes a small ember to start a fire like this.
Residents Urged to Exercise Caution
The incident is a stark reminder for residents and visitors along the coastline to dispose of hot materials carefully. Investigations confirmed the blaze was accidental but serve as a warning that improper disposal of BBQ embers can cause devastating fires.
