South East Set for Soaking as Met Office Warns of Severe Thunderstorms
Yellow Warning Issued for Kent and Southern England
The Met Office has slammed a yellow weather warning across Kent and much of southern England, forecasting a deluge tomorrow that could dump nearly a month’s worth of rain in just a few hours.
Expect heavy downpours, thunder, and frequent lightning strikes, with up to 35mm of rain per hour and a possible 60mm in two hours. To put that into context, last July saw just 82.4mm of rain for the entire month across the UK.
The warning runs from 10am to 9pm, hitting Kent, Surrey, Sussex, Essex, and London hardest in the afternoon before easing as night falls.
“Consider if your location is at risk of flash flooding,” the Met Office urged. “If so, consider preparing a flood plan and an emergency flood kit. Prepare to protect your property and people from injury.”
Prepare for Travel Mayhem and Safety Risks
Residents are warned to secure outdoor belongings including bins, garden furniture, gazebos, trampolines, and sheds ahead of gusty winds.
Drivers must check road conditions and reconsider journeys where possible. Commuters using rail and bus services should look out for timetable updates.
Power outages are a real danger during the storms. The Met Office advises gathering torches, spare batteries, and phone power banks now to stay prepared.
Emergency Services Urge Extra Caution
While the chances of the most extreme weather hitting are very low, official sources warn those in flood-prone areas to stay alert and stay safe.
