Buckingham Palace unveils first official painted portrait of King since coronation

Masterpiece by top portrait artist Jonathan Yeo

The Palace made history today revealing the first official painted portrait of King Charles III since his coronation. The artist behind the stunning work is none other than celebrated portraitist Jonathan Yeo.

Yeo’s star-studded portfolio

Yeo is no stranger to big names. His impressive lineup includes Idris Elba, Cara Delevingne, Sir David Attenborough, Nicole Kidman, Malala Yousafzai, and former UK Prime Ministers David Cameron and Tony Blair. His art hangs in the Royal Academy of Arts and the prestigious Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery in Washington DC.

Four sittings over two years

The portrait was painstakingly created during four sittings with the King between June 2021 and November 2023. Sessions took place at both Highgrove in Gloucestershire and Clarence House in London.

Artist praises the honour

At the grand Buckingham Palace unveiling, Yeo said:

“It was a privilege and pleasure to have been commissioned by The Drapers’ Company to paint this portrait of His Majesty The King.”

The portrait beautifully captures the spirit of the monarchy and cements Yeo’s artistic legacy.
