A people trafficker who smuggled nine migrants, including a four-year-old child, in freezing conditions has been jailed for four years.

Border Force Interception

Constantin-Florin Pauliuc, a Romanian national, was stopped by Border Force officers at the Port of Dover on November 8, 2024, after arriving from Calais, France.

A search of his van uncovered six Vietnamese nationals and three Albanians, including the young child, crammed into a cramped rear compartment, deprived of food, water, or sunlight.

Initial Denial and Investigation

Pauliuc initially denied knowledge of the migrants hidden inside his van but later admitted he had been paid £300 to transport them after victims provided statements confirming his involvement.

Investigators also found that Pauliuc used false number plates in an effort to avoid detection and conceal his criminal activity.

Sentencing and Government Response

At Canterbury Crown Court on Tuesday, February 25, Pauliuc was sentenced to four years in prison for assisting unlawful immigration.

Minister for Border Security and Asylum, Dame Angela Eagle, condemned his actions, stating:
“Anyone who exploits our borders for profit can expect to face jail.”

“This government is committed to staying ahead of people-smuggling gangs that put the UK’s border security at risk. We will continue to take strong action to dismantle these criminal networks and ensure they face justice.”

Smuggling for Profit at the Expense of Human Lives

Stephen Blackwell, from Immigration Enforcement Criminal and Financial Investigations, said:
“Pauliuc crammed these vulnerable people inside his van with little regard for their safety or welfare, trapping them for hours in freezing temperatures without food, water, or sunlight.”

“Subjecting them to this was worth just £300 to him.

Authorities continue to crack down on illegal immigration networks, targeting those profiting from human trafficking.
