The A249 Detling Hill was closed in both directions between Scragged Oak Road and Rumstead Lane from around 2:10pm, as fire crews battled a significant blaze that sent plumes of smoke across the area.

The road has now reopened, but drivers are still being urged to exercise caution.

Loud Bang Heard Before Fire Erupted

Local residents reported hearing a loud bang, which was followed by thick smoke billowing from the industrial site.

It is understood that an “explosion”  took place within an out building  at the estate just off the busy A249.

Emergency services rushed to the scene, including:

  • Six fire engines
  • A bulk water carrier
  • A firefighting robot (Uncrewed Ground Vehicle)
  • Kent Police
  • South East Coast Ambulance Service (SECAmb)
  • Electrical safety engineers from UK Power Networks

Residents Advised to Keep Windows and Doors Closed

Due to the heavy smoke, those living near Detling Hill and the surrounding areas have been advised to keep their windows and doors closed as a precaution.

A spokesperson for Kent Fire and Rescue Service said:

“Crews are working hard to bring the fire under control. We’re asking people to avoid the area and to share this message with anyone nearby who may not have internet access.”

Firefighters are tackling the blaze using breathing apparatus, main jet hoses, and advanced firefighting equipment, including robotic assistance.
