Third Arrest Made in Shocking Kidnapping of Elderly Man in Oldham

The Major Incident Team of Greater Manchester Police (GMP) has made a third arrest in connection with the shocking kidnapping of an elderly man in Oldham.

The incident, which occurred on September 15, 2024, at around 9pm in the Lee Street area of Oldham, involved the elderly victim being forcibly dragged into a black car while walking home. The assailants reportedly blindfolded him, demanded money and personal belongings, then attacked him before eventually abandoning him on a dark road in the Rishworth area of West Yorkshire.

On September 22, a 39-year-old man was arrested in Blackpool on suspicion of kidnapping. He is currently in custody awaiting questioning. This arrest follows two previous arrests in connection with the incident:

  1. An unidentified man was arrested earlier in the investigation and has since been released on bail.
  2. Shohad Miah, born April 30, 2000, from Royton, was charged with kidnapping, grievous bodily harm, robbery, and intentional strangulation.

Detective Inspector Emma Hulston from GMP’s Major Incident Team stated, “We have now arrested three men in connection with this shocking incident, and we will continue to make good progress with our enquiries.” She reassured the public that despite the alarming nature of the crime, it is believed to be an isolated incident with no wider threat to the community.

The victim, who managed to seek help by knocking on a door at around 10.40pm on the night of the incident, is currently receiving support from specialist officers as he recovers from the traumatic ordeal.

Police are urging anyone with information that could assist the investigation to come forward. Information can be submitted through the major incident portal or by contacting the investigation team directly. For those wishing to remain anonymous, the independent charity Crimestoppers is also available.
