Police Close Investigation Into Tesco Lorry Fireball on M25 Near Godstone

Police have concluded their investigation into a dramatic incident where a Tesco lorry erupted into flames on the M25, finding no evidence of criminal conduct.

The shocking incident occurred shortly after 10 PM on October 20, between Junction 5 for Sevenoaks and Junction 6 near Godstone. Dashcam footage captured the moment the lorry crashed into a central barrier, igniting a massive fireball that engulfed the vehicle and spilled flames across the motorway.

Police Statement

A spokesperson for Surrey Police said:
“Our investigation into a single-vehicle collision between a lorry and the central reservation on the M25 on October 20 has concluded. Following a thorough investigation, there was no evidence found of criminal conduct, and no arrests have been made. The case has now been filed.”

Witness Accounts

Motorist Anthony Moc, who was driving behind the Tesco lorry, described the terrifying scene:
“He smashed into the barrier, and there was a big ball of fire. I was panicked and a bit scared. This was the first time I had seen any sort of accident while driving. I was worried the lorry was going to explode.”

Another witness reported pulling the driver to safety before the flames intensified.
“It was so lucky no one else was involved. We managed to hold all traffic back on both sides until the fire service arrived,” the witness said.

Emergency Response

The blaze forced the closure of the M25 in both directions. Five fire engines and two water carriers attended the scene, with crews working for 10 hours to extinguish the fire and clear the wreckage.

The intensity of the flames caused extensive damage to the road surface and central reservation barrier, further complicating the recovery process.

Tesco and Fire Service Response

Surrey Fire and Rescue Service deferred all comments to the police, while Tesco declined to respond to inquiries about the driver’s condition, employment status, or any potential internal actions.

Aftermath

The driver of the lorry sustained only minor injuries, according to Surrey Police. National Highways confirmed the incident caused significant disruption to the busy motorway, and repairs to the damaged infrastructure required extensive work.

Despite the terrifying nature of the incident, no other vehicles were involved, and no further injuries were reported.
