Lewisham Council has unveiled ambitious plans for a £24 million investment aimed at breathing new life into Lewisham town centre. The significant funding, consisting of £19 million secured from the government’s Levelling Up Fund and an additional £5 million contributed by Lewisham Council, seeks to transform key aspects of the town centre to support local businesses, enhance community spaces, and improve connectivity.
One of the focal points of the revitalization effort will be the historic Lewisham market, which will undergo a comprehensive transformation to bolster local trade and attract more visitors. Proposed changes include reconfiguring the layout to create more space for traders, upgrading facilities to manage waste more effectively, and introducing environmentally friendly canopies to extend trading hours. Additionally, new paving, lighting, and seating will be installed to enhance the overall ambience of the market area.
The iconic Grade II listed Clock Tower is also set to undergo refurbishment, preserving its historic charm while ensuring its longevity for future generations. Funds will be allocated towards the renovation of Lewisham Library, which will be transformed into a dynamic culture and business hub. The revamped library will feature expanded book collections, a dedicated workspace for local businesses and students, a rooftop bar, ground floor café, and a community space known as the Lewisham Lounge for exhibitions and social gatherings.
Improvements to the high street will focus on enhancing connectivity and accessibility for pedestrians, cyclists, and motorists alike. Planned upgrades include the installation of new road crossings, the addition of green spaces and trees, improved cycling infrastructure, and the creation of a mobility hub for cyclists and electric vehicles. Enhanced lighting and CCTV coverage aim to improve safety and security throughout the town centre.
A spokesperson for Lewisham Council expressed optimism about the transformative impact of the investment, emphasizing its potential to stimulate economic growth, generate employment opportunities, and create a more inviting and vibrant town centre. Residents and local groups are encouraged to contribute their input and ideas to ensure the revitalization efforts align with the community’s needs and aspirations.
