Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, is exploring the possibility of introducing a city-wide free open-access Wi-Fi network for London. The plan aims to provide Londoners and visitors with a seamless and convenient internet experience.

While many pubs, shops, and hospitality venues in London offer free Wi-Fi, users often face the inconvenience of repetitive sign-ups and logins. Khan proposes to establish a unified, user-friendly Wi-Fi network that eliminates these hassles.

Khan believes that access to the internet is essential for everyone, and he wants to ensure that every Londoner and visitor has the best possible experience. The initiative is expected to benefit tourists, business transactions, and the growing number of individuals working remotely.

As part of his Digital Access for All initiative, Sadiq Khan has allocated £20,000 to collaborate with City Hall and London & Partners in developing a comprehensive plan to enhance internet access for residents and visitors. This includes working with organizations like the Wireless Broadband Alliance, Wi-Fi and mobile network providers, local boroughs responsible for key areas in the city, and cities with expertise in offering open access internet.

Notably, Mayor Khan has previously introduced mobile service to London’s underground Tube network, particularly on the central section of the Elizabeth Line. Presently, 20% of Tube stations have mobile coverage, and this is set to double by spring 2024 as Transport for London (TfL) expands the service.

Sadiq Khan expressed his commitment to improving digital services and providing a better internet experience for all Londoners and visitors, contributing to a more prosperous and connected city.
