Man Found Guilty of Attempted Murder After Stabbing Police Officer 23 Times

A man who stabbed a police officer 23 times with a pair of scissors during a violent attack in Maidstone has been found guilty of attempted murder.

Robert Jenner, who assaulted PC Sean Quinn in June 2023, was convicted after a trial at Maidstone Crown Court. The attack left PC Quinn with severe injuries, including a gaping wound on his forehead that exposed his skull. Jenner had denied charges of attempted murder and wounding with intent but was found guilty by the jury.

Background of the Incident

The court heard that officers had gone to Jenner’s flat in Maidstone after reports that he had been running naked in a nearby park, exposing himself to women. Jenner, a self-proclaimed naturist, argued that it was his right not to wear clothes. He had a history of similar offenses, with 11 previous convictions for exposure, and had been released from prison just two days before the attack for breaching an order banning him from wearing see-through clothing.

On 15 June 2023, Jenner barricaded himself inside his flat with a sofa when officers attempted to enter. After forcing their way in, officers tried to subdue him with pepper spray. However, Jenner launched a frenzied attack on PC Quinn, stabbing him repeatedly in the head, face, and neck.

Heroic Actions of Officers

The court heard harrowing testimony from PC Angela Bates, who described the “cry of anguish” as her colleague was attacked. She intervened by striking Jenner on the back of the head multiple times, eventually causing him to release the scissors.

Despite the severity of his injuries, PC Quinn survived the attack but has not yet been able to return to duty. Kent Police has stated they are “offering support to allow him to get back to the job he loves.

Court Proceedings and Verdict

Prosecutors argued that the severity of the attack demonstrated Jenner’s intent to kill PC Quinn. The defense contended that Jenner believed the officers were unlawfully entering his flat and claimed he acted in self-defense.

Jenner refused to attend the trial and was not present in court for the verdict. Members of PC Quinn’s family wept upon hearing the guilty verdict.

Community and Police Reaction

The incident has drawn widespread condemnation, with many expressing solidarity with the injured officer. Kent Police issued a statement praising the bravery of PC Quinn and his colleagues, emphasizing their commitment to protecting the public even in the face of extreme danger.

Jenner is expected to be sentenced in the coming weeks. The court will consider the gravity of the attack and his history of offenses during sentencing.

Ongoing Support for PC Quinn

The impact of the attack on PC Quinn has been profound. He continues to recover from his injuries, and his future in the force remains uncertain. Colleagues and the wider community have rallied around him, expressing hope for his eventual return to duty.
