A man who went on the run after repeatedly stabbing his roommate has been sentenced to 19 years in prison. Alfid Kalid, 25, attacked the man he shared a room with at their home in Laverstoke Court, Derby, in September 2023.
After the violent assault, Kalid fled the scene but was later arrested. He claimed to Derbyshire Police that he had stabbed his roommate out of revenge for an alleged assault, but authorities found no evidence to support this claim.
Kalid, of Peet Street, Derby, was found guilty of attempted murder at Derby Crown Court. On Wednesday, he was sentenced to 19 years in prison.
According to police, Kalid stabbed his victim with such force that the weapon was left buried in the man’s back. The victim survived due to the swift response of emergency services.
Detective Chief Inspector Greg McGill commented on the severity of the crime, saying, “That Kalid’s victim did not die that day is down to sheer good fortune, as well as the fast actions of the emergency responders who first attended the scene.
McGill also dismissed Kalid’s claims that he had been assaulted, adding, “The excuse Kalid gave, that he was assaulted, was investigated and no evidence was found to back up his claim. Even if he had been a victim himself, his actions were wrong and very nearly led to a young man losing his life.
The incident has served as a reminder of the devastating consequences of violence and the importance of resolving conflicts without resorting to aggression. Authorities praised the emergency responders whose quick actions helped save the victim’s life.
