Man arrested after Life Changing Collision Near Rotherhithe Tunnel

A life changing road traffic collision (RTC) occurred near the Rotherhithe Tunnel on Commercial Road E1 at 10:15 pm on 3rd April 2025. The incident has led to the road being blocked in both directions, causing significant disruption to traffic.

Police Investigation Underway

Officers from the Serious Collision Investigation Unit are currently on the scene and have launched a full investigation into the circumstances surrounding the fatal incident. The exact cause of the collision is yet to be determined, and police are appealing for any witnesses to come forward.

A Metropolitan Police spokesperson said:

“Police were called to a collision involving a car and a pedestrian on Commercial Road, Limehouse at 21:47hrs on Thursday, 3 April.

The pedestrian, a man in his 30s, was taken to hospital where he remains in a life-threatening condition.

The driver, a 19-year-old man, was arrested at the scene on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving. He remains in custody.

Commercial Road was closed in both directions for recovery and investigation. It was reopened at around 08:00hrs on Friday, 4 April.

Witnesses or anyone with any information or footage is asked to call 101 or post on X @MetCC quoting CAD 7951/03Apr.”

Impact on Traffic and Public Transport

The collision has resulted in the closure of Commercial Road in both directions, significantly affecting local traffic and public transport routes. The following bus routes are affected:

  • 15, 115, 135, D3, N15, N550, N551

Transport for London (TfL) has advised commuters to seek alternative routes and expect delays. Motorists are also urged to avoid the area where possible.

Police are appealing to anyone who may have witnessed the collision or has dashcam footage to come forward. Witnesses are encouraged to contact the Metropolitan Police on 101, quoting reference number CAD 7951/03Apr  Alternatively, information can be reported anonymously through Crimestoppers at 0800 555 111.
