In a startling turn of events, Ian Magee, a 61-year-old resident of Shalfleet Drive in Alvaston, has been sentenced to eight years in prison for a vicious and unprovoked stabbing incident that occurred on April 6, 2023. The shocking attack took place at the Standing Order pub in Derby city centre, leaving a 48-year-old man severely wounded but miraculously alive, thanks to life-saving treatment.
Magee had initially pleaded not guilty to the charge of wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm. However, a jury at Derby Crown Court swiftly reached a different conclusion in November of the previous year, finding Magee guilty in less than two hours. Today, the perpetrator faced sentencing at Leicester Crown Court, where he received an eight-year prison term, coupled with an extended four-year license period.
The impact of the stabbing on the victim’s life has been profound, as he revealed feelings of depression and recurring nightmares about being killed. His daily routine has been significantly disrupted, leading to his avoidance of public places, including town centres and pubs, and a withdrawal from social interactions.
Physical consequences of the attack include a loss of sensation in the jaw and neck area on the left side, where the stabbing occurred, as well as an inability to feel his bottom lip or chin. Nightmares have become a constant, sleep-disrupting presence, characterized by recurring themes of being stabbed, experiencing intense neck pain, and ultimately succumbing to death.

Temporary DC Cathryn Mansfield, who spearheaded the investigation, condemned the incident as utterly appalling. She emphasized the shocking nature of the attack, which transpired in broad daylight within a bustling city centre pub. Magee, without provocation or justification, produced a pocketknife and inflicted a potentially lethal stab wound. The victim had displayed no aggression warranting such a violent response.
DC Mansfield acknowledged the devastating toll exacted on the victim and expressed hope that the sentencing would facilitate his healing process and allow him to move forward. She also expressed gratitude to the pub staff, patrons, and first responders, whose prompt actions played an instrumental role in saving the victim’s life.
