Heavy rainfall in Surrey has led to dozens of people being evacuated or rescued from their homes since Sunday as flooding continues to affect the area. Lloyd Hatton, the flood response lead at Surrey Fire and Rescue Service, confirmed that assistance has been provided to individuals in the Egham and Chertsey regions.
To support those affected by the floods, four dedicated rest centres have been established in the area.
In addition to assisting, authorities are urging residents to avoid driving through floodwater for their safety.
During the early hours of Monday, 32 individuals were evacuated from the Abbeyfields mobile home park in Thameside, Chertsey. Egham Town councillor Sam Jenkins noted that although water levels on the Thames appear to be stabilizing, the repercussions for Runnymede are ongoing, with some properties still at significant risk.
The flooding in Surrey has primarily resulted from rising water levels in the River Thames, following a prolonged period of consistent rainfall. Numerous homes and businesses in the region have been affected by the inundation.
As of Tuesday, flood warnings were issued for nearly the entire stretch of the River Thames in Surrey, impacting areas such as Chertsey, Walton, Sunbury, Molesey, and Egham. The Environment Agency has likened the current flood situation to those experienced in 2013, although it is not expected to reach the levels observed in 2014.
On Wednesday morning, 17 flood warnings remained in effect for Surrey, underscoring the ongoing challenges posed by the flooding. Authorities are continuing their efforts to mitigate the impact of the floods and provide assistance to affected residents.
