An investigation is under way after a tragic collision involving a police car in Eltham, which resulted in the death of a pregnant woman and her unborn baby.

The incident occurred around 18:15hrs on Thursday, 17 October, when an unmarked police car collided with another vehicle on the A20, near the junction with Kidbrooke Park Road, SE9.

Emergency services, including the London Ambulance Service, London Fire Brigade, and London’s Air Ambulance, responded to the scene. Despite their efforts, a 38-year-old pregnant woman in the vehicle was pronounced dead, along with her unborn child, due to injuries sustained in the collision.

Authorities have informed the woman’s next of kin, and they are currently being supported by specially trained officers.

Detective Chief Superintendent Trevor Lawry, who oversees policing in Greenwich, expressed his condolences: “My heart goes out to the woman’s family and friends who have lost their loved ones in these tragic circumstances. An investigation into the circumstances of this collision is under way by the Independent Office for Police Conduct, and we will assist with their enquiries in any way we can.

The road remains closed at the scene of the accident, and local motorists are advised to seek alternative routes. Detective Chief Superintendent Lawry thanked residents and commuters for their patience as the investigation continues.

The two police officers who were in the unmarked vehicle involved in the crash were also taken to hospital but have since been discharged.

The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) is leading the investigation to determine the full circumstances surrounding the collision.
