Man Jailed for £40,000 Distraction Theft Spree Targeting Elderly Across Surrey and Beyond

A serial thief who targeted elderly shoppers in a string of distraction thefts across Surrey and surrounding counties has been jailed for more than two years.

Claudiu Marcu, 51, of London, was sentenced to two years and four months in prison at St Albans Crown Court on 19 June 2025. He pleaded guilty to conspiracy to steal, multiple counts of theft, and fraud by false representation.


Organised Theft Spree Spanning Multiple Counties

Between November 2024 and February 2025, Marcu operated inside supermarkets, preying on elderly victims. He would use distraction techniques to steal wallets, purses, and handbags — later using the stolen bank cards to withdraw cash and make fraudulent purchases. Authorities said the total loss exceeded £40,000.


Arrest and Joint Force Operation

Marcu was finally arrested in Hertfordshire on 18 March 2025 following a coordinated investigation by:

Investigators uncovered the scale of his crimes through CCTV footage, witness statements, and forensic evidence.


Police Statement

PC Emilie Budd, who led the Surrey aspect of the investigation, said:

“Marcu was calculated and targeted the vulnerable for financial gain. Thanks to the dedication of all involved, he will now face justice behind bars and cannot continue his offending.”
