A fire that spread to two properties on Dorset Crescent in Basingstoke was caused by sunlight refracting through a glass object, firefighters have confirmed.
The incident occurred at around 4pm on Saturday afternoon when Hampshire & Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service were called to a fence fire that had rapidly spread to adjoining homes.
Firefighting Response
Crews from Basingstoke fire station responded swiftly. Firefighters, wearing breathing apparatus, used hose reel jets to tackle the flames and prevent further spread.
Once the fire was under control, ventilation fans were deployed to clear smoke from the affected buildings.
Crews remained on scene until approximately 6pm, conducting home fire safety visits for nearby residents before returning to station.
Safety Warning Issued
A fire service spokesperson issued a warning following the incident:
“This incident serves as a vital reminder to keep glass ornaments and mirrors out of direct sunlight, particularly during periods of hot weather.
Glass objects can magnify and refract sunlight, creating intense heat and increasing the risk of accidental fires in or around your property.”
No injuries were reported, but residents are being urged to review fire safety precautions, especially with temperatures expected to remain high.
