More than 1,000 counterfeit Labubu dolls from the popular Pop Mart collectible series have been seized by Bexley Trading Standards in a crackdown on unsafe toys. These counterfeit Labubu dolls are identified as fake by their poor quality and Lacklack of genuine branding.
The operation also uncovered 128 other unsafe toys, which were confiscated from two shops in england/the-Boroughborough/”>the borough.
Safety Risks Exposed
The counterfeit Labubu dolls – which have surged in popularity through viral social media trends – were found to pose serious hazards to children.
- Choking risks due to small, detachable parts.
- No safety testing or valid compliance checks.
- Misleading packaging featuring fake UKCA and CE safety marks.
- Potential chemical risks, including harmful phthalates.
One Dolldoll was so poorly manufactured that its Eyeeye popped out when squeezed. This defect highlights the shoddy quality often associated with counterfeit Labubu dolls.
Warning to Parents and Retailers
Councillor Richard Diment, Cabinet Member for Neighbourhoods, said:
“This is a stark reminder that not everything trending online is safe for children. Our Trading Standards team is working hard to protect families in Bexley from unsafe and counterfeit goods. We urge residents to buy only from trusted retailers and report any concerns immediately.”
Genuine Pop Mart Labubu figures feature official branding such as a holographic sticker, QR code, manufacturer details, and exactly nine teeth. Buyers should be aware of the differences to avoid counterfeits.
Businesses have been warned to carry out due diligence on suppliers, keep traceability records, and avoid sourcing stock from unverified or “cash-in-hand” sellers. Selling counterfeit Labubu dolls, like selling other unsafe toys, is a criminal offence.
