The trial of Axel Rudakubana, 18, accused of a horrifying attack during a Taylor Swift-themed dance class, began today at Liverpool Crown Court. Rudakubana faces three counts of murder, 10 counts of attempted murder, and additional charges relating to the production of a biological toxin and possession of terrorism-related materials. The attack occurred on 29 July 2024 at the Hart Space in Southport, northwest England, during what was supposed to be a joyful dance class for young girls. Armed with a knife, the assailant fatally stabbed three children—Alice Dasilva Aguiar, 9, Elsie Dot Stancombe, 7, and Bebe King, 6.
Eight other girls aged 7 to 13, their instructor Leanne Lucas, and Jonathan Hayes, a neighboring business worker who intervened, were also injured. Fifteen other children, as young as 5, were present but uninjured.
Background of the Defendant
Rudakubana, who was 17 at the time of the attack, was born in Wales to Rwandan immigrants. Following his arrest, additional charges were brought, including the production of ricin and possession of an al-Qaida manual found on his computer. Prosecutors have not identified a clear motive for the rampage, and police have refrained from classifying the stabbings as acts of terrorism.
Rudakubana, who has refused to speak in court, had not guilty pleas entered on his behalf.
