Default Heading H1

Travel chaos has erupted in one of Turkey’s top holiday destinations as raging wildfires tear through the İzmir province, prompting mass evacuations, home destruction, and the closure of İzmir Adnan Menderes Airport.

The fires began near the popular coastal resort town of Foça and were quickly fanned by strong winds, engulfing residential neighbourhoods and forests in flames.

Airport Shutdown Amid Inferno

  • All flights suspended at İzmir Adnan Menderes Airport from 4pm local time due to visibility and safety concerns.
  • Incoming flights diverted to other Turkish airports.
  • Thousands of passengers stranded as jets were grounded during intense aerial firefighting efforts.
  • Water bombing planes and helicopters were seen attempting to control the blazes.

Evacuations and Destruction

  • At least 550 residents evacuated from 175 homes in Ilıpınar, Foça.
  • Homes and vehicles torched, with photos showing burned-out shells of cars and buildings.
  • Four firefighters suffered smoke inhalation; two hospitalised.
  • Over 625 personnel, 46 engines, 13 water trucks, and 6 helicopters deployed in İzmir alone.

Suspected Arson and Power Line Investigation

One man has been arrested on suspicion of arson after allegedly setting his own house on fire, sparking the blaze.
Authorities are also investigating high-voltage power lines as a possible ignition source.

Warnings Issued

İzmir’s Governor Süleyman Elban urged caution, warning:

“The next four or five days will be very hot, with strong winds and low humidity. These conditions are perfect for a fire. Everyone’s life is at stake. We must all be extremely cautious.”

Fires Spread Across Turkey

Wildfires have also been reported in Manisa, Aydın, Denizli, Bursa, Bilecik, Bolu, Sakarya, and Gaziantep. In Bilecik, 23 homes were destroyed and over 60 buildings damaged.

Turkey’s Environment Minister Murat Kurum said at least nine major fires were active across western Turkey.

Travel Advice

  • Travellers heading to İzmir or Aegean resorts should check with their airline for flight status.
  • British nationals in Turkey are advised to follow local authorities and avoid affected areas.
  • Monitor updates from the FCDO and Turkish Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD).
