Surrey County Council Takes Action

In contrast, Surrey County Council has begun removing these flags from roads in and around Caterham, extending their efforts to the borough Boundaryboundary at Coulsdon Common. The council expressed concern over the proliferation of these flags, many of which are linked to the far-right campaign “Raise the Colours.” Croydon Council remains inactive, they are collaborating with Surrey County Council to address the issue. The official stated, “Surrey County Council is responsible for lampposts and street furniture within our boundary.”

Safety and Community Concerns

Surrey County Council’s teams routinely inspect highways and remove any unauthorised or unsafe items. They are addressing instances of St George cross markings painted on roads and are reinstating affected road markings in accordance with their protocols.

“Where they identify unlicensed attachments to lamp columns in Surrey, these will be removed as part of their routine inspection and maintenance activities,” the official added. They emphasised the importance of public safety and the need for approval for any attachments to street lighting columns.

Monitoring the Situation

Surrey County Council has acknowledged concerns regarding the flags’ impact on the community and their associated messages. They are actively monitoring the situation and have confirmed that Surrey Police is also involved.
