A huge gas explosion has destroyed a terraced house in Worksop, Nottinghamshire, prompting a major emergency response and the evacuation of nearby homes.
Emergency services were called to John Street at around 7.30pm on Saturday evening following reports of a loud blast that shook the area. When police and fire crews arrived, they found the property had completely collapsed, with debris scattered across the street and damage to neighbouring houses.
Multiple fire engines from Worksop, Warsop, Mansfield, and Clowne stations responded to the scene. Firefighters continue to work through the wreckage as part of the ongoing rescue and recovery operation.
Evacuations and Road Closures
Nottinghamshire Police confirmed that a number of properties in the area have been evacuated, and several roads are closed. A police cordon remains in place while emergency responders assess the damage and ensure the safety of nearby structures.
Chief Inspector Neil Humphris said:
“This is a major incident, and emergency services will remain at the scene throughout the night.
Multiple properties have been evacuated as we work with our partners to respond to this incident and understand how it happened. We are actively working to account for all local residents.”
Police are also warning members of the public to avoid the area to allow emergency services to continue their work safely and efficiently.

Explosion Impact and Public Reaction
Photos shared on social media show widespread destruction, including a collapsed roof, rubble across the street, and damage to adjacent buildings. Aerial images taken by drones reveal the full extent of the devastation, as fire crews continue to damp down hotspots in the debris.
A spokesperson for Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service confirmed:
“Firefighters are currently dealing with a gas explosion on John Street, Worksop. We ask that the public avoid the area while crews do their work.”
So far, no serious injuries have been confirmed, but police and ambulance services are continuing to assess the situation and check on residents.
Investigation Underway
Investigators believe the explosion was caused by a gas leak, though the exact circumstances remain under investigation. The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) and utility companies are expected to attend the scene as part of the inquiry.
Community Support
Local councillors and residents have already begun to offer support, with some nearby homes reportedly offering shelter to evacuated neighbours. The local council is expected to open an emergency rest centre if required.
This is a developing story. Anyone with information about the incident is urged to contact Nottinghamshire Police on 101, quoting the location and time of the explosion.
