Linda Robson has withdrawn from the entire run of this year’s pantomime Aladdin at Orchard West Theatre in Dartford after falling ill, with bosses confirming the much-loved actress is “seriously unwell” and will not be appearing while she recovers.

The announcement came as the festive production opened, with the theatre moving quickly to keep the show on the road. Singer and stage performer Antony Costa – best known as a member of boy band Blue and most recently seen on Celebrity MasterChef – has stepped into the role of Councillor Costa at short notice.

In a statement, Costa said: “They say in Pantoland, anything can happen and all of a sudden I’m Councillor of Dartfordia! I love panto so much and am so happy to help out and to join the amazing cast at Orchard West. Panto is the best way to celebrate the festive season and I’m looking forward to seeing lots of families join in the fun!”

Orchard West Theatre Director Tal Rosen praised the eleventh-hour switch, saying: “You can always expect the unexpected with live theatre so we are delighted Antony has been able to come in at the eleventh hour to make sure we put on a fantastic show which we know our audiences will love. He’s a true panto hero! We know everyone will join us in wishing Linda well and thank them for their understanding.”

Understudy dates confirmed

While Costa prepares for the role, the theatre confirmed West End performer and understudy Hollie Cassar will also cover Councillor Costa on selected performances: 18, 20, 23 and 31 December.

Fans send support

News of Robson’s absence prompted an immediate response from fans, with well-wishers posting messages of support and hoping for a swift recovery as the production continues through the Christmas period.

Aladdin at Orchard West features comedian Rikki Jay, panto favourite Jason Marc-Williams, Britain’s Got Talent magician Mandy Muden, and seasoned performer Richard Foster-King, alongside Cleve September, Anton Stephans, Ruby Mann and an ensemble cast.
