West Midlands Police are urgently seeking assistance from the public to identify a man wanted for questioning in connection with a series of distraction burglaries across Birmingham. The incidents, which occurred throughout September, have primarily targeted elderly women in their homes.

According to investigators, the suspect has been posing as a council official or water company employee, claiming he needs to check the victims’ taps. This ruse has allowed him to gain access to multiple residences.

In a particularly distressing incident, an 88-year-old woman was assaulted in her home in Erdington. She remains in hospital in serious condition following the attack.

Despite extensive CCTV inquiries, detectives have so far been unable to identify the suspect. They are now turning to the public for help in locating him.

Police have issued the following guidance to the public:

  • Do not approach the suspect if you see him. Call 999 immediately.
  • Provide any information via Live Chat on the West Midlands Police website or by calling 101.
  • Quote crime investigation number 20/819250/24 when reporting information.
  • To remain anonymous, contact Crimestoppers at 0800 555 111.

Authorities urge residents to remain cautious when answering their doors to strangers, and to always ask for identification from anyone claiming to be an official.

Anyone with information that may assist in identifying the suspect is asked to come forward. West Midlands Police are hopeful that public assistance can lead to progress in this investigation and bring the perpetrator to justice, ensuring the safety of vulnerable residents.
