A 29-year-old man has pleaded not guilty to two counts of murder following a fatal collision involving a black e-bike that claimed the lives of two young men.
Alex Rose appeared via video link from HMP Wandsworth at Guildford Crown Court on Tuesday, where he also denied a charge of perverting the course of justice. The victims, William Birchard, 21, and Darren George, 22, died after a collision on the A316 southbound slip road on the M3 in Sunbury-on-Thames, Surrey, on July 22.
Details of the Case
The court heard that Rose is accused of murdering Mr. Birchard and Mr. George and falsely reporting his black Ford Ranger as stolen between July 21 and 22 in an attempt to cover up his involvement. Prosecutors allege that this false report had the potential to “pervert the course of justice.”
During the short hearing, Rose confirmed his name and entered his not guilty pleas. He is currently being held on remand.
Co-Defendant Involved
Tara Knaggs, 24, a co-defendant in the case, also pleaded not guilty to assisting an offender. It is alleged that she booked a hotel and flights for Rose in an attempt to help him evade authorities. Knaggs, of Great Ayton, Yorkshire, denied all charges and will also stand trial.
Trial Date Set
Both defendants are set to face trial on August 11, 2025. They will next appear in court for a preliminary hearing in January.
Community Impact
The deaths of William Birchard and Darren George have left a lasting impact on their families and the local community. Tributes poured in for the victims, both in their 20s, with many expressing their grief and support for their loved ones.
Further updates are expected as the case progresses.
