The man and woman, both of whom are from the local area, were arrested on suspicion of causing death by careless driving and failing to stop at the scene of a collision. They remain in police custody as the investigation continues.

Temporary Assistant Chief Constable Stuart Hooper expressed his condolences, saying: “My thoughts are with the friends and family of the girl and boy who have died this evening. Specialist officers are supporting them at this truly unimaginably difficult time.”

Hooper also appealed for information, urging anyone who witnessed the incident or has relevant footage, including CCTV or dashcam footage, to come forward. “Our officers will be carrying out enquiries in the area this evening to establish the circumstances that led up to the collision. If you saw anything or have any information, please get in contact.”

Essex Police continue to investigate the collision, and the identities of the victims have not yet been released. Officers are urging the public to assist with any details that could help piece together the events leading to the fatal crash.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Essex Police or to submit footage via official channels.
