Jailed for Attack on Mother and Attempted Rape of Daughter
Steven Murphy, 45, from Tiller Road, Cottam, Preston, has been sentenced to 11 years behind bars plus an eight-year extended licence. The registered sex offender was found guilty at Preston Crown Court on December 1 after assaulting a mother and attempting to rape her 12-year-old daughter while she slept.
How the Crime Unfolded
- Murphy contacted the mother via Facebook and visited her home in April for her daughter’s talent show celebration.
- He pretended to offer lifts home to guests, then sneaked back to stay alone with the mother and daughter.
- The predator sexually assaulted the mother before she fell asleep due to medication.
- He then entered the daughter’s bedroom, climbed into her bed, and launched a horrifying assault and attempted rape.
- The attack only stopped when the brave girl repeatedly told him to leave her alone.
Court Labels Murphy a Dangerous Offender
The judge handed down a substantial custodial term of 11 years. Murphy must serve two-thirds of his sentence before parole eligibility. Following release, he will face strict supervision under an eight-year extended licence designed to protect the public.
Detective Commends Victims and Urges Others to Speak Out
“First and foremost I would like to commend the two victims for their courage in coming forward and reporting what happened to them and for their bravery throughout the judicial process,” said Det Sgt Sue Wilson of Preston CID.
“I hope this sentence means they can try to move forward knowing this dangerous predator is behind bars. I also hope it encourages other victims of sexual abuse to come forward and speak to police knowing we will investigate with care and prosecute offenders where possible.”
