A controlled explosion has been successfully carried out by Ministry of Defence (MOD) specialists to safely dispose of an unexploded World War II ordnance discovered at a construction site off Station Road in East Tilbury. The device, found on Tuesday, November 5, prompted a 500-meter safety cordon and coordinated efforts from multiple agencies to secure the area.

The controlled detonation took place as scheduled between 12 p.m. and 2 p.m. today, with temporary road closures around Station Road, Church Road, Coopers Shaw Road, and Fort Road, and a suspension of nearby c2c railway services between Grays and Pitsea. Authorities have confirmed that the operation was conducted smoothly and safely, with no incidents reported.

Chief Inspector Anthony Atkin, Thurrock district commander, thanked the public for their cooperation, saying, “We are pleased that the operation went according to plan, ensuring public safety throughout the process. We appreciate the patience shown by local residents and travellers who were affected by today’s precautions.”
Normal travel operations are now resuming in the area, though residents are advised to check with National Rail Enquiries for the latest updates.
