London Fire Brigade has declared a major incident after a huge blaze erupted at an electrical substation in Maida Vale, near Paddington, early this morning. Fifteen fire engines and over 100 firefighters have been deployed to tackle the inferno, which has sent plumes of thick black smoke billowing across central London.

The fire, which broke out around 5.30 AM at the substation on Victoria Passage, Aberdeen Place, has led to widespread alarm, with around 73 emergency calls made to the Brigade’s control room.

Station Commander Paul Morgan, who is leading the response, said:

“This is a very visible fire and there is lots of smoke. Residents are advised to keep their windows and doors shut to avoid inhaling smoke.”

Eyewitnesses describe terrifying scenes

Residents described waking to “loud bangs like explosions” before being urgently evacuated from their homes.

“People were banging on our flat door shouting ‘fire, fire’ and telling us to run,” said one local resident. “It was terrifying. I feared the worst. I just grabbed my shoes and ran.”

Flames were seen shooting up to 70 feet high, according to witnesses at the scene. The fire has continued to grow, and firefighters have warned that the power to the substation must be cut before they can fully tackle the blaze with water and foam units.

Footage from the area shows flames raging above rooftops while smoke clouds spread across the city. Residents in areas as far as SW7 in southwest London have reported seeing the smoke.

Possible impact on telecommunications

Early reports suggest that the substation could be linked to telecommunications infrastructure, although it is not believed to power the city’s transport network. Emergency crews have deployed specialist equipment designed to deal with electrical fires.

A specialist bulk foam unit and turntable ladder are currently being used at the scene. No injuries have been reported so far.

The cause of the fire remains unknown at this stage. London Fire Brigade has confirmed that investigations will begin once the fire is fully contained.

Public urged to avoid the area

Authorities have urged people to stay away from the Maida Vale and Paddington areas to allow firefighters full access to the site. Residents have been repeatedly warned to keep windows and doors shut due to hazardous smoke conditions.

Londoners are sharing dramatic videos and photos across social media, showing the extent of the smoke cloud over Westminster and beyond.
