Three men have been charged with murder following the death of a 31-year-old inmate at HMP Fosse Way, a Category C prison in Leicester. The man was found unresponsive in his cell on Tuesday and was pronounced dead at the scene by the East Midlands Ambulance Service.
Shaan Karim, 38, Thierry Robinson, 21, and Ashirie Smith, 18, have all been charged with murder and have been remanded into custody. They are due to appear at Leicester Magistrates Court on Friday.
Two other men, aged 27 and 28, who were also arrested on suspicion of murder, have been released under investigation. A sixth man, aged 35, was previously released under investigation after being arrested in connection with the case.
The incident is under investigation by Leicestershire Police, and no further details have been released about the circumstances surrounding the inmate’s death.
HMP Fosse Way, which houses approximately 1,715 inmates, opened in June 2023 on the site of the former HMP Glen Parva, which closed in 2017. The new prison, operated by services firm Serco, was designed with a focus on rehabilitation through education, training, and employment opportunities to reduce reoffending.
A spokesperson for Serco confirmed the death, stating, “We can confirm that a 31-year-old man has died at Fosse Way prison. The matter is now being investigated by Leicestershire Police.”
The investigation is ongoing, and authorities are continuing to gather evidence.
