A 12-year-old boy from Cardiff has tragically died in “catastrophic circumstances,” just weeks after starting a new school term. Marc Aguilar, described as a “popular and likeable” pupil and a keen sportsman, passed away on Saturday afternoon, leaving his family and community devastated.

Emergency services were called to Marc’s home in St Mellons at around 4 pm. South Wales Police confirmed there are “no suspicious circumstances” surrounding the sudden death, and an investigation is ongoing on behalf of the coroner.

Family member Daniel Arthur paid tribute to Marc, saying, “What would’ve been such a beautiful day ended in catastrophic circumstances. Our little cousin Marc passed away aged 12. The family are truly heartbroken.” He went on to describe Marc as “a nice, polite boy” and said the family felt fortunate to have known him.

Marc was a year eight student at Ysgol Gyfun Gymraeg Bro Edern in Penylan, Cardiff. In a letter to parents, the school announced his death, stating, “Marc Aguilar was a popular and likeable pupil and a keen sportsman. He had many friends at Bro Edern, and he will be missed sorely.

The school has offered support to students and staff, with a team of counsellors available to help those affected by the tragedy. Staff members have also visited Marc’s family to offer their condolences.

A spokesperson for South Wales Police added, “Our thoughts are with his family and friends.
