Random Knife Attack During Radio 2 Festival Policing Operation

A man has been found guilty of attempted murder after launching a vicious knife attack on a British Transport Police (BTP) Special Constable at Preston railway station.

Russel Smith, 54, of Shakespeare Road, Preston, was convicted of attempted murder and possession of a bladed article at Preston Crown Court on Thursday, February 7, 2025. He is due to be sentenced on Monday, April 14, 2025.

Unprovoked Attack on Duty Officer

The court heard that the attack took place at 9:30 pm on September 7, 2024, while the victim was part of a policing operation during the Radio 2 Summer Festival, ensuring passenger safety.

The officer was speaking to two members of the public about their travel plans when Smith approached from behind, repeatedly reaching into his trouser pocket where he had concealed a kitchen knife.

He then followed the officer outside the station, standing directly behind him while gripping the knife in his pocket. As the officer walked back into the station, Smith suddenly withdrew the blade, raised it above his head, and stabbed the officer in the back of the neck.

Officer’s Quick Response Saves His Life

The impact of the forceful blow caused the officer to fall forward, while Smith continued to move towards him as he desperately tried to crawl away.

Hearing his colleague’s screams, another officer rushed to his aid, prompting Smith to back away. The injured officer’s colleague then used captor spray to subdue Smith, forcing him to drop the knife, before another officer quickly handcuffed and detained him.

Serious Injury Could Have Been Fatal

The victim suffered a puncture wound to his thoracic spine. Authorities later confirmed that only sheer luck prevented the injury from being life-threatening or permanently disabling.

Smith’s Violent Behavior in Custody

Following his arrest, Smith smeared his own faeces on the walls of his cell and continued to act aggressively. He made threats to harm more officers and even inquired whether his victim had died.

Police Condemn ‘Premeditated and Heinous’ Attack

A spokesperson for British Transport Police praised the bravery of the officers involved and condemned the unprovoked and calculated attack.

“This was a premeditated and heinous attack on an officer who was simply doing his job, ensuring the safety of the public. The swift response of his colleagues prevented a potential tragedy.”

Smith now faces a lengthy prison sentence when he appears for sentencing in April.
